The Lancaster of Bill Townsend heading at full throttle over Holland, towards the coast and the relative safety of the North Sea. Tasked with attacking the Ennepe Dam, Bill Townsend’s Lancaster AJ-O was actually in the air the longest of any taking part in the raid and he was rightly awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for valour.
